A data tem o objetivo de promover a adoção de animais abandonados, educar as pessoas para não abandonar os animais, além de mostrar os benefícios de tratar devidamente os animais domésticos. Adotar, cuidar e esterilizar são os conceitos divulgados neste dia, que ajudam a combater a super população de animais nas ruas. Todos os dias são abandonados animais a sua sorte nas ruas, estando dependentes da bondade de estranhos ou de instituições de abrigo aos animais para sobreviverem. Em Portugal, são abandonados cerca de 10 mil animais por ano, havendo mais de meio milhão de animais sem dono no país. Neste dia realizam-se eventos, como a promoção da adoção de animais, nos centros das cidades portuguesas. Centenas de animais abandonados são transportados, pelos canis e associações, para locais públicos no intuito das pessoas se apaixonarem por um animal e o levarem para casa.
