Georges Pompidou
† 2/4/1974Georges Jean Raymond Pompidou, French statesman who served as Prime Minister of France (1962-1968) under Charles de Gaulle and later as President of the Republic (1969-1974). It promoted the economic modernization of France and facilitated the United Kingdom's entry into the European Economic Community. The Pompidou Center in Paris, dedicated to contemporary art, was created in his honor. He died in Paris on April 2, 1974 at the age of 62, a victim of Waldenström's disease.
