Claudio Monteverdi (born May 15, 1567, and died November 29, 1643) was a visionary Italian composer and choirmaster. A pioneer in the transition from the Renaissance to the Baroque, he composed monumental works such as "L'Orfeo" and "L'incoronazione di Poppea", laying the foundations of modern opera.
