    Georges Jean Raymond Pompidou, French statesman who served as Prime Minister of France (1962-1968) under Charles de Gaulle and later as President of the Republic (1969-1974). The Pompidou Center in Paris, dedicated to contemporary art, was created in his honor. He died in Paris on April 2, 1974 at the age of 62, a victim of Waldenström's disease.
