D. Sebastião (born January 20, 1554, and died August 4, 1578) was the sixteenth King of Portugal. His disappearance in the tragic Battle of Alcácer Quibir generated the myth of "Sebastianism", plunging the country into a dynastic crisis that led to the temporary loss of independence.
