Giuseppe Conte is a rare case in European politics: a law professor and lawyer with no prior political experience who was catapulted to the position of Prime Minister of Italy in 2018. He led the country through the most critical phases of the global pandemic and eventually took leadership of the Five Star Movement, consolidating himself as a born mediator and a voice of moderate populism.
