D. Henrique I (born January 31, 1512, and died January 31, 1580) was the seventeenth King of Portugal. A Cardinal of the Church, he ascended to the throne in old age after the disaster of Alcácer Quibir, and his death without heirs precipitated the succession crisis of 1580.

Son of essayist António José Saraiva and nephew of historian José Hermano Saraiva. Author of four novels and several works on politics and history. He passed away in Lisbon at the age of 77.
