On March 30, 1981, the 40th President of the United States, Ronald Reagan, survived an assassination attempt by John Hinckley Jr. outside the Washington Hilton Hotel. The attack shocked the world, and Reagan's rapid recovery substantially bolstered his public image at the height of the Cold War.
