An imposing fleet commanded by Lopo Soares de Albergaria sets sail from Lisbon under the reign of King Manuel I bound for India, to succeed Afonso de Albuquerque as Governor of the State of India. The expedition reinforced the Portuguese naval, commercial, and military presence along the Indian Ocean routes.
