Nobel Peace Prize for José Ramos Horta and Ximenes Belo

On October 11, 1996, José Ramos Horta and Dom Ximenes Belo were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for their efforts in promoting peace and independence in Timor-Leste, after years of fighting against Indonesian occupation. International recognition contributed to strengthening the Timorese cause and the country's independence in 2002.
