Portuguese writer, historian, sociologist, and politician, a leading figure of the celebrated Generation of 70. Author of monumental works of historiography and national thought such as "History of Portugal," "History of Iberian Civilization," and "The Sons of King John I." He died on August 21, 1894, at the age of 49, in Lisbon.
