Opening of Santa Maria Airport

Today we celebrate the inauguration of Santa Maria Airport, on the island of Santa Maria, on November 28, 1946. IATA Code: SMA. The airport has a 3,048 meter runway and is located 5 km from Vila do Porto. It was one of the first international airports in Portugal and played a vital role during the Second World War. It currently serves commercial flights and serves as an important stopover point for transatlantic flights.
