Foundation of Saint Petersburg

Tzar Peter I of Russia, known as Peter the Great, formally founds the city of Saint Petersburg with the laying of the first stone of the Peter and Paul Fortress. Designed to be a "window to Europe" and the new imperial capital, the city became a grand European cultural, political, and architectural hub.
