Foundation of Amnesty International

British lawyer Peter Benenson formally founds Amnesty International in London following the publication of his "The Forgotten Prisoners" manifesto. The creation of the prestigious human rights organization was directly motivated by Benenson's outrage upon reading a news report about two Portuguese students imprisoned by the Salazar dictatorship for toasting to freedom.
