Performance of A Portuguesa at the São Carlos Theatre

On March 10, 1890, the patriotic march "A Portuguesa", with music by Alfredo Keil and lyrics by Henrique Lopes de Mendonça, was performed at the Great Patriotic Concert of the São Carlos Theatre. Born in response to the British Ultimatum, the work was enthusiastically acclaimed by the public, beginning the journey that would consecrate it as the National Anthem of Portugal.
