Election of Pope Francis

On March 13, 2013, Argentine Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio was elected the 266th Pope of the Catholic Church, taking the name Francis. As the first Latin American and Jesuit pontiff, he inaugurated a papacy focused on deep mercy, structural reform of the Curia, and the uncompromising defense of global social justice.
