Original Definition of the Metre

On March 30, 1791, following a proposal by the Academy of Sciences, the French National Assembly formally adopted the definition of the metre as one ten-millionth of the distance between the North Pole and the Equator. This historic decision marked the foundation of the Decimal Metric System.
