Extinction of Religious Orders Decree ("Mata Frades")

Joaquim António de Aguiar, Minister of Justice for King Pedro's liberal government, promulgates the historic law declaring all convents, monasteries, colleges, and regular religious orders in Portugal extinct. The measure, which confiscated Church property for the State, earned him the famous nickname "Mata Frades" and redefined the country's social and patrimonial structure.
