David Rittenhouse

David Rittenhouse (born April 8, 1732, and died June 26, 1796) was a brilliant American astronomer, mathematician, and instrument maker. Known for his unparalleled precision in colonial times, he built optical instruments and was instrumental in mapping North American borders and studying the transit of Venus.
