D. Afonso III (born May 5, 1210, and died February 16, 1279) was the fifth King of Portugal. His historic reign marked the end of the Portuguese Reconquista, culminating with the definitive capture of the Algarve and the strategic transfer of the kingdom's capital to Lisbon.
