Creation of the Royal Observatory of the Navy

On March 18, 1798, by charter of Queen Maria I, the Royal Observatory of the Navy was created in Lisbon. This avant-garde scientific institution was designed to boost the study of astronomy and navigation, ensuring the continuous technical rigor of the Portuguese fleets in the global oceans.
