Creation of the State Surveillance and Defense Police

Creation of the State Surveillance and Defense Police (PVDE) in Portugal. Predecessor to PIDE, it was the main instrument of political repression during the Estado Novo. Created by Decree-Law nº 22:992, it resulted from the merger of the Portuguese International Police with the Political and Social Defense Police.
