Royal Charter of Pennsylvania

On March 4, 1681, King Charles II of England granted a vast royal land charter in North America to the Quaker and entrepreneur William Penn, in settlement of a debt. This territory, initially named "Sylvania" (woods) and later Pennsylvania, became a historic haven for religious freedom and one of the foundational pillars of the future American nation.
