Bartolomeu Dias

Bartolomeu Dias (born c. 1450 and died May 29, 1500) was one of the most extraordinary Portuguese navigators and explorers of the Age of Discovery. He achieved historical fame by becoming the first European to sail around the southern tip of Africa, doubling the fearsome Cape of Storms (renamed Cape of Good Hope), a monumental technical feat that opened the maritime route to the Indian Ocean.
