On March 11, 2004, the Spanish capital was targeted by a series of coordinated bombing attacks on commuter trains at Atocha station. The attack, perpetrated by an Islamic terrorist cell, resulted in 192 fatalities and nearly 2,000 injured, constituting the deadliest terrorist attack in Spain's history.
