António-Pedro Vasconcelos

António-Pedro Vasconcelos, Portuguese filmmaker, film critic and screenwriter. Born in Leiria, he was one of the founders of the "New Portuguese Cinema" movement in the 60s. He directed landmark films such as "O Lugar do Morto" (1984), "Jaime" (1999), "Call Girl" (2007) and "Os Gatos Não Têm Vertigens" (2014), achieving success both with critics and the public. In addition to his career as a director, he stood out as a film critic and political commentator, being an active voice in the defense of Portuguese culture and national cinema. He was also a professor at the Escola Superior de Teatro e Cinema and author of several books on cinema. His work contributed significantly to the affirmation of Portuguese cinema, combining artistic sensitivity with popular appeal. He passed away in Lisbon on March 5, 2024, aged 84.
