Abraham Ortelius

Abraham Ortelius (born April 14, 1527, and died June 28, 1598) was a brilliant Belgian cartographer and geographer. His genius culminated in the publication of the "Theatrum Orbis Terrarum" in 1570, a monumental work universally recognized as the first modern atlas in history.
