    King Manuel I (born May 31, 1469, and died December 13, 1521) was the fourteenth King of Portugal. During his historic reign, known as "The Fortunate", the country reached the apex of its imperial expansion with the discovery of the sea route to India by Vasco da Gama and the official arrival in Brazil by Pedro Álvares Cabral.
