    Bernard Law Montgomery

    Bernard Law Montgomery, 1st Viscount Montgomery of Alamein, British field marshal. One of the most important military figures of the Second World War, he became famous for his victory in the Battle of El Alamein (1942), considered a turning point in the war in North Africa. He commanded Allied forces on D-Day and the subsequent campaign in northwestern Europe. Known for meticulous planning, concern for the well-being of his soldiers and his often controversial personality. After the war, he held important military positions in NATO and was elevated to the nobility for his services. He died in Alton, Hampshire, on 23 March 1976, aged 88.
