D. Afonso Henriques (born July 25, 1109, and died December 6, 1185) was the first King of Portugal. Known as "The Conqueror", his military determination and political astuteness secured the independence of the County of Portugal and expanded the nation's borders southward during the Reconquista.
The Battle of Ourique, which took place in 1139, is considered one of the founding milestones of Portuguese national identity, with D. Afonso Henriques emerging victorious against the Moors and being acclaimed as king.
In 2000, Concorde suffered its first and only fatal accident, resulting in a major impact on aviation and the aircraft's eventual removal from service.
